The final proposal for Nock symbology in “One Kelvin” was somewhat jocose, but not arbitrary. Each operation in Nock—and many other symbol sets—purports to describe some process, which means some actual sequence of events that can happen literally or analogously in creation.

They are operators on reality and reflect patterns in nature. The choice of descriptors is a free choice, but must reflect an actual process. And of course the terminology used to describe those processes constrains the perceptual and imaginal universes (Sapir–Whorf hypothesis).
What is missing from Nock? For starters, it has no simple logical operators: NOT, XOR, NAND, &c. It has no decrement or sizeof, altho it is aware of natural numbers. It has no notion of its own size or extent; thus Nock 12 is easily ghosted into the system. All of those are true operators, in some sense: they reflect things that happen, much as rubrification or putrefaction. But what is considered fundamental is at play.

Give me a lever and a place to stand, and I will move the world. (Archimedes)
Nock 0 is is the binary tree, the root and branch of actuality and possibility.
⨀ :: Nock 1, the Nail in the Sure PlaceNock 1 is K, the Konstant operator of the SK calculus.
ᒥ :: Nock 2, the GallowsNock 2 is S, the Substitution operator of the SK calculus, and is the place and means of execution.
ᕡ :: Nock 3, the Bowed NarcissusNock 3. Could Narcissus (doubled) tell himself apart?
ᙈ :: Nock 4, the Growing SeedNock 4 is the only rule that “knows” the nature of number besides identity. All else numerically must proceed thence.
ᘞ :: Nock 5, the LabyrinthNock 5 walks each Labyrinth to know if it is the same.
𒀭 :: Nock 6, the Meeting of Many WaysNock 6, here represented by DINGIR, is the crossroads and the council.
ᗗ :: Nock 7, the JunctionNock 7 brings together two roads to traverse.
ᓬ :: Nock 8, the Road Without EndNock 8 provides the means of continuing the subject and its evaluation.
ᑍ :: Nock 9, the InvocationNock 9, calling to the sun above the standing stone.
ᘺ :: Nock 10, the Changéd MindNock 10, ironically itself the latest change to Nock 4K. The decrement from Nock 5K was motivated by the desire to edit nouns, to freely change a given address in a noun and produce the altered noun. (That Nock got as far as it did without this is remarkable.)
ᖖ :: Nock 11, the Whisper in the DarkNock 11: when you whisper words beyond the veil, who knows what will hear and respond? Or how? The hint is a prayer to whatever daimons run the substrate of your consciousness and its surrounding creation.
ᙒ :: Nock 12, the Basilisk in His LairThe basilisk is the deceiver and the accuser, the breaker of referential transparency. And yet, of course, he does not exist. Formally, as he turns the eyewitness to stone, he cannot be observed.
